Modern United States Coins Most Likely to Appreciate in Numismatic Value

2016 1/4 Ounce Gold Standing Liberty Quarter Centennial

Hermon A. MacNeil’s original “standing liberty” quarter design is one of the greatest in the history of United States coinage. This centennial commemorative release offers the standing liberty design for the first time on a gold coin. This design will always appeal to hobbyists, and with a mintage limit of around 100,000, this seems like a safe bet

2017/2018 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin

This coin will go down in history and be remembered for the first appearance of an African American woman on an United States minted coin. It is also the first ethnically diverse depiction of the Lady Liberty. These milestones alone are enough reason to add to your collection. This coin is offered as the 2017 one ounce gold coin, the 2018 1/10th ounce gold coin, and the 2017 silver medal.

2020 End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Silver Eagle

I remember logging onto the United States Mint website as soon as this coin was released, and it sold out in minutes. American Eagles are some of the most highly collected U.S. coins with the walking liberty design seeming to have stood the test of time. This is a coin to buy and hold onto when you consider the World War II anniversary subject matter and a low mintage of 75,000.

(Honorable mention to other low mintage American Eagle coins)

Morgan/Peace Dollar 2021 Commemorative

Classic Morgan and Peace dollars are the most collected silver dollars in the hobby, and each release of these 2021 commemoratives sold out within approximately an hour. The United States Mint announced that it would not be releasing 2022 versions of these coins, so it is unlikely that the hype for these centennial coins will die down anytime soon. Although these are commemorative coins, it’s very possible these will hold a special place in the hearts of collectors similar to their original, circulated counterparts.

2001 American Buffalo Commemorative

This is one of the few coins from the U.S. Mint's modern commemorative coin program that has done extremely well in terms of price appreciation. The original buffalo nickel design has always been a favorite in the hobby, so it’s not hard to see why this 2001 American Buffalo Commemorative’s value has held up so well. The American buffalo design is just one of those timeless designs that you can buy and hold forever.

Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Silver Dollar Coin

People are fascinated with space, and the 1969 moon landing was one of the greatest achievements of the United States as well as mankind. The original design is one of the best executed in the U.S. Mint's modern commemorative coin series, and given the subject matter, it’s easy to say that this coin will have long lasting appeal.
